Game of 'chicken' on a one-lane bridge

Took a nice long walk down the beach with Alison & Tansy while Frank & Nina slept in. Frank was in a very quiet mood. I think he was tired. Today we stopped at galleries & such instead of going to the beach because it had gotten cloudy & a lot cooler. And besides, we already did the ocean thing.

We drove a lot & played "Spotto". 'Bathtub' kept getting put on the list of things to find. Bathtubs are used as cattle drinking troughs & are quite common on the north island & northern part of the south island. For some reason I can't seem to pick them out from regular white troughs. Grrrrr. And by now, they are getting very scarce. I picked some doosies for them...windmill, wheelbarrow, chicken, ladder, road kill & blue mail bin (mailbox). Frank picked "moon". Which we didn't find till that night.

One gallery we stopped at had a wood carved caricature of dresser drawers. It was terribly askew with socks hanging out of open drawers, a tie draped over the top, a mouse, an apple core, a rug, and a vase of flowers that were reflected in a mirror. And it was all wood! Also a wooden light bulb on the ceiling that was reflected in the wooden mirror too. We were told that a whole room was carved in wood at a gallery in Richmond.

NZ has quite a few one way bridges & stretches of road that have signs from both directions telling the driver which side of the bridge or road has right-of-way. If the arrow pointing up is larger than the one pointing down, then we have the right-of-way. We were following a truck that got on one of these bridges. We couldn't see the other side & our sign said the other side had right-of-way. We followed the truck onto the bridge. He was a little ways ahead of us. When he got off, a car got on coming our way. We were zipping along & were about 3/4 of the way across. He was zipping along even faster, right at us. I felt like we were playing chicken. We both slowed down at the last minute and sat there for a moment. He yelled "Give way!" Frank said, "But we're more than halfway across". The man yelled, "Give way!" with his finger pointing our direction. Frank looked in his rear view mirror & here were 2 more cars behind us. He shrugged at the man & said "I now have two cars behind me". The man yelled, "Give way!" again. This time the guy in the truck 2 cars back got out & yelled for the man in front of us to "Give way!" The grumpy man in a business suit huffed & put his car in reverse & sped off the bridge. As we drove past him he yelled something & Frank yelled, "You bastard! You should move to New York!" And of course the man in the truck had a few words too.

We made it to Richmond right before it closed & got to see the room. It was awesome. An askew TV, TV tray, a remote control, a plate of eggs, an umbrella, a rug, slippers, a camera (or maybe that was with the chest of drawers), & much more. We were not allowed to take pictures but I bought a postcard of the chest of drawers. A magazine article was framed on the wall telling about the artist. He evidently committed suicide. So sad.

We got back to Alison's. Washed up a bunch of clothes.
